Finally retired my old Alvey I inherited from my dad. He bought it 60 years ago and it was still going. Wood spool. Bought an egg beater but went back and bought a new 6500BCV. I learnt to cast as a 6 year old and still love them. The old one will be sent back for refurbishment and then passed on to my grandson.
I bought a 550 C5, I use it a little differently than this guy shows, but it casts a mile once you figure it out. I’m looking forward to taking it to Florida and fishing the surf with it.
mate they are the best for surf fishing, they get sand in them you just wash them in the salt, can’t kill them. They are also cheap, indestructible and youd be amazed how far they cast.
the best reels in the world bar none!
Just realised – dad bought it over 60 years ago!!!!
Bloody hell, that makes me OLD!

I will never use anything but Alvey. I even use the 40b off pier, brilliant. Yes I get strange looks and plenty of questions.
alvey is the best.i caught a 300 pound bull shark in florida keys.
John, you’re a crazy old bastard, but I found your video’s quite informative.
Part 3 of this video is actually the same as part 2 though.
